Cause of Accident: Head On Collision
The crush killed 37 people most of whom were students from Masvingo teachers college who were travelling from Harare. At least 20 people were burnt, their bodies charred beyond recognition, after he bus collided head on with a haulage truck. The accident happened on the 52 km peg near Chartsworth along the Harare-Masvingo highway.[1] A total of 65 passengers were seriously injured when the Mhunga bus hired by Masvingo Teachers' College collided head-on with the truck. The drivers of both vehicles died on the spot.
It is alleged that more than 100 passengers were travelling on the ill-fated Mhunga bus. The truck, operated by Trans Truck Charters, was carrying a full load of bags of maize which went up in smoke.[1] The student teachers were returning from a sporting trip in Harare. College officials had decided the students should watch the Amazulu-Dynamos soccer match at the National Sports Stadium in Harare after their own sports activities.
