Mercy Mutsvene is a Zimbabwean female gospel musician. She broke the limelight in the early 2000.

Background

Mercy Mutsvene attended Highfield 2 High School in Harare. Her father is a Pastor at Apostolic Faith Mission. Back then, she would sing in church with the choir. This prompted her to take music as a career. The gospel singer was married in 2002 to Simbarashe Ngwenya and they divorced in 2007 before she got married to a Zambian bishop and relocated to Zambia. The marriage lasted for a few months and in 2009 she got married to Tongai Nheta.[1]

Career

Her former husband Simbarashe Ngwenya then referred her to gospel singer Pastor Elias Musakwa. Musakwa took her in and created a 'Zimbabwean Rebecca Malope'.

Rebbecca Malope Claim

It was reported that Mutsvene made people believe that there was a working relationship between her and Rebecca Malope, the South African Gospel Artist. She claimed too that Rebecca knew about her music since some of it was recorded in SA. She kept on dismissing the accusations of singing Malopes lyrics citing that Malope had given her green light to record music that is similar to hers. However, It became clear that she was lying when Malope toured in Zimbabwe. The SA gospel singer dismissed the claims as lies citing that she didn’t know her. Some of Mercy’s songs such as ‘Handingabvumi’ and ‘Muri Mutsvene’ are direct translations of Malope’s songs ‘Mangingavumi’ and ‘Ulilanga Lelanga’.[2]

She however released songs that are attributed to Malope name. Some of the songs are ‘Ndinovimba Nemi’, ‘Tichasanganiswa’, ‘Zano’, ‘Kedenga’, ‘Ndinonamatira’ and many more.

Alleged Marital Problems

It was reported that Mutsvene was not recording music as her marriage problems are a major setback to her music. In July 2014, she temporarily bounced back into the limelight with performances at the first edition of the Eaglesvale Schools Concert at the 7 Arts Theatre. In 2016 Mutsvene reportedly distanced herself from a facebook post under her name that had mentioned that her marriage was not doing well. The facebook post read:

“As you know my name is Mercy Mutsvene. I’m a gospel artist. Many of you have been wondering why I have been silent with my music and let me explain. I was married to this man on the photo Tongai Nheta. He was very abusive and still is. I was not faithful in our marriage and this led to us parting ways. He is in a relationship with an another (sic) woman and I would want to keep her identity,”

“Many might ask why I did this but I’m sick and tired of keeping silent. I can’t report him to the police because he is well known in those circles. All I want is to let the fans know that I will be back. And I have not stopped making music. I am recording in South Africa. God bless you my fans. I am really sorry…”

When she was reportedly asked about the post, she denied having written it,

“Someone could have hacked my Facebook account and we are running around to find out who the culprit could be,” she said. “All that was written on that Facebook post are lies. I am happily staying with my husband. It could be the work of enemies bent on destroying our relationship. Mind you even Jesus Christ had enemies among people who followed him.”[1]
