Harrison Nkomo is a Zimbabwean lawyer. He gained public attention when he represented Evan Mawarire in July 2016. Nkomo also represented war veteran Douglas Mahiya who was charged with insulting or undermining the authority of the president. in February 2017, Nkomo resumed his role as Evan Mawarire's lawyer, after Mawaraire was arrested at Harare International Airport on his return to Zimbabwe, after 6 months in exile in the United States.

Nkomo was able to get Mawarire released on bail at the High Court, after Magistrate Elisha Singano had denied him bail at the Magistrate's Court. Nkomo was able to convince High Court judge, Justice Clement Phiri that the evidence presented by the state was weak and that Mawarire was a worthy candidate for bail.

Harrison was born on the 6th of November. He is from Masvingo.

Education

Nkomo attended Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo before enrolling at the University of Zimbabwe where he graduated with a law degree in 1999.[1]

Legal Career

Nkomo is a named partner at Harare law firm Mhishi Nkomo Legal Practice. He became a named partner on the 1st of January 2017, when the firm changed its name from Mhishi Legal Practice to Mhishi Nkomo Legal Practice. Nkomo is also a member of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Nkomo has a special interest in Corporate, Civil Litigation, Telecommunication law and Criminal Law. He has been registered as a legal practitioner for fourteen years. Harrison has represented a number of journalists, both locally and internationally. His active involvement in Media Rights Litigation saw him being one of the final nominees of the Index of Censorship's (an institution that advocates for the media and press freedom in the world) International Award in 2009.

He has handled international litigation at tribunals such as ACHPR – African Commission on People's and Human Rights and African Court. Harrison is the Chairperson of the Media Centre of Zimbabwe, a Commissioner with the securities Commission of Zimbabwe, a member of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and a member of the coalition of the African Court.

Harrison is a highly experienced and renowned corporate, Civil and Criminal Law Litigation Lawyer and has represented litigants from the lowest to the highest courts in Zimbabwe.

Other Achievements

Harrison Nkomo is a board member of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe.
