Gilbert Muponda is Zimbabwean Entrepreneur and Investment Banker and Founder of GMRI Capital and Co-Founder of 3MG Media Limited.[1] He was also one of the shareholders in a local financial institution CFX Bank.[2]

Muponda was born on February 10 in 1975.[1]

Educational Background

Muponda attended Allan Wilson High School .[1] He set up the Reporters club and launched Le Sable School Magazine. He was also was National High schools Quiz Team Captain in 1993. For his university education, Muponda attended National University of Science and Technology ( NUST).[1] At NUST, he was class Representative for Finance Students. He also tried his luck in student politics and succeeded as he was elected to University Senate to represent Faculty of Commerce.[1]

Work History

Muponda started his proffesional career with NMB Bank whilst waiting for university results as Trainee Corporate Finance Officer.[1] Through his capabilities, he was promoted every six months and rose to be the youngest manager to head the NMB Bank Corporate Finance Team. He was the youngest member of the team that listed the then (Greenfield venture) Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. Part of the team that structured and raised funding for Zimbabwe’s biggest privatisation transaction - acquisition of the controlling stake by a Management Consortium in Cotton Company of Zimbabwe.[1]

In 2007,Muponda formedResearch Institute - GMRI Capital which was focused on Financial, Economic and Political Research.[1] In 2008, he co-found 3MG Media which was a Media Venture offering online news distribution, web hosting, web design ,social networking and client online presence strategy development.[1]

Whilst he was based in Canada in 2009, Muponda is said to have written a letter to president Robert Mugabe.[1] In the long letter, Muponda lamented how the then governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Gideon Gono had failed to adjust to the demands of the economy especially between 2004 and 2005.[3]

Corruption Allegations and Charges

Muponda was sent to jail by a magistrate on Thursday March 13, 2004. Muponda, had previously fled Zimbabwe in 2004 while facing a corruption trial for mishandling investor funds. He handed himself over to the police before being taken before magistrate. Muponda and co-director Nyasha Watyoka were arrested in 2003 after ENG Capital failed to pay creditors.[4] The case eventually dismissed before the courts citing lack of evidence against the accused.
