Edzai Kasinauyo was a former Zimbabwean footballer and administrator.
Background
He was born on 28 March 1975 and died on June 16 2017.
Career
Kasinauyo was part of Zimbabwe’s 2006 Africa Cup of Nations squad.[1] Locally he played for CAPS United Football Club before spending almost a decade playing in the topflight league in South Africa and featured for Moroka Swallows and Ajax Cape Town. At the time of his death he was acting as an agent to players such as Khama Billiat and Evans Rusike[2] He was involved in numerous sports deal for local clubs including Adidas’ kit deal with Dynamos and Highlanders through his E-Sport sportswear business.
Kasinauyo was elected to the ZIFA board in December 2015 and was handed the role of development by Philip Chiyangwa. However, in March 2016 Kasinauyo was expelled by ZIFA after being accused of plotting to fix an AFCON qualifier against Swaziland together with Ian Gorowa, Nation Dube and former ZIFA CEO Henrietta Rushwaya.
Match fixing Scandal
He was implicated in a match fixing scandal and received a 10 year ban which was lifted after he was cleared along with former Zimbabwe Football Association chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya and ex-Warriors assistant coach Nation Dube, after Harare regional magistrate Lucy Mungwari said there was no evidence linking the three to the scandal.
At the time of his axing Kasinauyo had been Zifa’s board member and was then banned without appearing before any disciplinary hearing. Allegations were that Kasinauyo was involved in a cartel which was attempting to fix the AFCON qualifier between Zimbabwe and Swaziland in March 2016. The claims made suggested he wanted to use his influence in the mother body to leak the list of players to the syndicate.[3]
Death
Kasinauyo died in the early hours of June 16 2017 with the Zimbabwean Football Association announcing the news via social media.[1] Kasinauyo passed away in South Africa at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg.
