Betty Makaya is a Zimbabwean female Urban Grooves singer who is based in South Africa. She is most known for her track Usipo, and a 2000 collaboration called Kurwizi which she did with late Urban Grooves singer, Jamal Mataure. Both songs were produced by Mutare based Tonderai Music Corporation (TMC).[1] Betty has also done collaborations with Alexio Kawara and Langton Deo.
Background
Makaya has said she sang in the choir at school, at church with her late mother in the Praise and Worship team. Now based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Betty has had her fair share of turbulent times that forced her into a five-year forced break from music.[2] Her role models include Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Chiwoniso Maraire and Thandiswa.[2]
Music
Her album, Ndichange Ndiripo, has been described as having been one of the albums to have defined the urban grooves genre in Zimbabwe.[3]
The song Kurwizi by Jamal Mataure, which she featured, was generally mistaken to be her song by fans, leading to many, according to Jamal, buying her album thinking the song was on it. “I was really overshadowed by Betty when we did the Kurwizi track. Most people thought I had featured on her track and they went on to purchase her album hoping to find that song," Jamal is reported to have said.[4]
After taking a hiatus for 5 years, in 2013 she announced that she was coming back into the music industry as she could not ignore her passion for the arts.[5] Sher did some public performances that same year in Zimbabwe.[6]
