Battle Of The Chefs Harare
Battle Of The Chefs Harare is reality television show which airs on ZBC TV. The program initially aired on Sundays between 1930hrs- 2000hrs, but was later moved to Thursday Night. Battle of the Chefs Harare was inspired by international cooking competitions like MasterChef, Chopped, The Ultimate Braai Master, etc and was started by Joseph and Veronica Bunga. [1]The show is open to both professional chefs and amateurs. The first episode of the reality show was aired in 2015. During the competition, a team of professional chefs compete for a $10000 [1] prize money.[2]The first season of the show was bankrolled by Joseph and Veronica Bunga who almost went broke due the financial outlay.[1] However, from season two onwards TM-PicknPay became the headline sponsor of the show.[1]
Show Format
Season One
Initially, in each episode of Season One, a team of two chefs competed against other teams in preparing three dishes: starter, main course and dessert. Registration for the Season was done online on Battle Of The Chefs website.[3] Contestants knew the ingredients prior to shooting the episode, therefore they were only required to come up with a dish from the ingredients provided. The contestants were given 45 minutes to prepare the dishes. Apart from that, they had access to a pantry with a wide range of ingredients and a fridge. The challenge was set to create creativity among participants. After every round, the judges critiqued every meal based on innovativeness use of ingredients, presentation and taste of the meals.[4]
Season 1 of the show had sixteen teams[5] which competed over a 60 day period. Each episode of Battle Of The Chefs required approximately 14 hours which were used for the shooting and editing.
Season Two and Season Three
From Season Two onwards, the format of the show changed a little bit in that it was now individuals competing against each other and not teams of two. In each episode, four chefs competed against each other in three challenges: technical challenge, innovation challenge and set recipe challenge. The chef who scored the lowest score was stripped of their chef's jacket.
