African Distillers also known as AFDIS, manufactures, distributes and markets branded wines and spirits and ciders. These products are sold in Zimbabwe and also exported. The Company has six depots in Bulawayo, Harare, Kwekwe, Masvingo, Mutare and Victoria Falls.
Background
Founded in April 1944 in Bulawayo.
Previously known as P J Joubert Limited but changed its name in 1946 to African Distillers Limited. Initially, its activities were centred around the sale and distribution of imported spirits, liqueurs and wines until in 1946 a distillery was acquired in Mutare and the local production of a range of spirits commenced.
In 1951 African Distillers became a public quoted company.
In 1974, the Company moved to its present headquarters at Stapleford, a complex just outside Harare which houses production, warehousing and distribution facilities.

Wine Estates
AFDIS owns three wine estates (Worringham Vineyard, Green Valley Vineyards and Bertrams Vineyards) producing 350,000 cases annually.
Worringham Vineyards
Purchased in 1970, in the hills of Esigodini, Bulawayo, with 110 acres (45 ha) under vines on shale, slate and granite soil. It produces the following types of wines: chenin blanc, sauvignon, semillon, merlot, pinotage and cabernet sauvignon.
Green Valley Vineyards
Purchased in 1975, in the foothills of the Eastern Highlands about 15 miles (25 km) from Mutare. This 620-acre (250-ha) estate has 135 acres (55 ha) under vines on sandy loam soil. It produces the following types of wines: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, clairette blanche, colombard and ruby cabernet.
Bertrams Vineyards
Purchased in 1980. It is just outside Gweru with 100 acres (40 ha) under vines on deep red loam soil. The estate produces the following types of wines: sauvignon, colombard, chenin blanc, pinotage, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, crouchen, muscat d'alexandrie [1]
Significant Events
Malcom Hollingworth retired as Managing Director in June 2013. He had been the Financial Director from 2003 and was appointed Managing Director in January 2011. After his retirement Cecil Gombera took his place as Chief Operating Officer (July 2013). Cecil Gombera joined the Company in October 2012.
