Govt Contemplates Lockdown Extension
The government will consider extending the 30-day level four national lockdown which ends next week.
Some health experts have called for the extension of the stay at home order following an exponential rise in new coronavirus infections and a surge in COVID-19 deaths in January.
While new infections have started to ease in recent days, they are still far higher than at the beginning of January or at the peak of the first wave in 2020.
Vice-chairperson of the Ad-Hoc Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on COVID-19 Amon Murwira on Thursday said they will hold a meeting and consider extending the lockdown. He said:
The efforts of Zimbabweans should be thanked because the lockdown is holding. The cases are going down but we have to hold on, and we want to thank all our health workers and security personnel for an excellent job.
We believe we will win this war. We will have a meeting (on the lockdown) and we will consider.
Meanwhile, police on Thursday said they have tightened enforcement to ensure that essential service providers and those who are exempted adhere to restrictions outlined in Statutory Instrument 10/2021.
