MDC: "The Electorate Is Not Choosing Between ZANU PF Or MDC In By-Elections"
Advocate Jacob Mafume, the Secretary for Elections in the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa has said that the ongoing by-elections do not reflect the will of the electorate as they are being manipulated by the ruling ZANU PF.
His remarks come when the MDC has lost almost all Parliamentary and Council by-elections held countrywide since the 2018 elections.
Responding to a question by Daily News’ Blessings Mashaya on the reasons why the party was losing in the by-elections, Mafume said that they did not lose, but Zanu PF retained its seats in those areas.
He added that ZANU PF had captured the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), security sector and traditional leaders to influence the results of the elections. He added:
This is democracy under threat and the principle of one man, one vote is under siege. Headmen are being used to shepherd villagers to polling stations, some even have the guts to be Zanu PF polling agents.
Then there is the issue of food aid and the role traditional leaders are playing in partisan distribution. It’s now a choice between starvation and democratic rights as opposed to Zanu PF vs MDC.
He said that the party will push for electoral reforms.
