Potential storage crisis as GMB only has 3 functional silo depots out of 12

Appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture and Mechanisation, Minister of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Mr Ringson Chitsiko revealed that the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) only has 3 functional silo deposits out of 12 storage facilities.

He also said that that GMB has already gone to tender to find companies that will refurbish the silos before farmers harvest. Chitsiko revealed that 36 000 farmers are contracted under the Command Agriculture Scheme who had planted 240 000 hectares of maize. He told the committee that they were expecting 5 000 per hectare.
